Should-ing — applying rigid moral demands (“they should have known better,” “this is how people are supposed to behave”) that generate outrage when violated. The reappraisal is preference over demand: you would have preferred X, but people are not obligated to match your expectations. Preferences can be disappointed. Demands generate anger when violated. The language shift is small; the emotional consequence is large.
Step 3 — Expressive Writing (Not Venting — Structured Processing)
Pennebaker and Beall (1986) demonstrated in the original expressive writing study that asking participants to write about their deepest thoughts and feelings about a traumatic or upsetting event produced measurable reductions in subsequent health-care visits and physiological distress markers.
